Background of the Study:
Access to government services is fundamental to socio-economic development and citizen empowerment. In Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, language barriers pose significant challenges that hinder effective communication between government officials and residents. When services are provided in languages that do not reflect the local populace’s linguistic competencies, misunderstandings and exclusions may occur (Okeke, 2023; Ibe, 2024). Research indicates that language discrepancies can lead to delays in service delivery, decreased public trust, and overall dissatisfaction among citizens (Uche, 2023). The region’s complex linguistic diversity further complicates service accessibility. As government agencies strive to implement inclusive policies, bridging these language gaps is essential for equitable access (Nwanne, 2024). Additionally, integrating sociolinguistic insights with public administration theory can reveal new strategies for improving communication between officials and citizens (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite government efforts to enhance service delivery, language barriers in Ughelli North continue to impede access to essential services. Citizens who are not proficient in the dominant administrative languages face difficulties understanding procedures and communicating their needs (Ibe, 2023). This mismatch between official language and local linguistic preferences creates disparities, undermining service equity and effectiveness.
